1 Spadina (Reader Request)
1 Spadina was the original Presbyterian Theological School owned by
Knox College. Designed in Gothic Revival style with buff brick and carved medieval stone detailing on one of the few
circular lots in the city, the building originally featured a lecture theatre, library, museum, dining hall, classrooms
and a residence.
When Knox College relocated to King's College Circle in 1915, 1 Spadina became a hospital for WW1 veterans. In 1943 it was
sold to Connaught Laboratories, researchers and manufacturers of what were then considered miracle drugs - insulin,
penicillin and vaccines such as the anti-rabies toxin. 1 Spadina was purchased by U of T in 1972. A project committee
has been established to consider options for space allocation (potentially for the Department of Fine Art),renovation
and restoration of the building.
